In his artistic practice Thierry deals with questions about authenticity, history, heritage and visibility.Through his use of various media including painting, sculpture and video, he brings reection to this moment, crafting probing yet poetic commentaries on the threads that link the past and the future. Oussou has produced a series of new ink, acrylic and oil-bar works on paper that capture his responses to living and working in Johannesburg, and the visual, aural and psychic impact of this time spent in the city. Distorted gures, faces, objects, and symbols oat freely against the dark background of the paper. Much of Thierry’s work is inspired by the observation of his environment, from chalk markings recording remittances on the walls of his grandfather’s room, to charcoal drawings of children playing in his hometown of Allada, Benin and other places where he has travelled. Thierry is interested in commonplace, everyday drawings - drawings that are barely noticeable yet ubiquitous. These drawings highlight the universality of drawing, as a shared visual language of expression.
Oussou was born in 1988 in Allada, Benin, where he founded the art studio Yè; he continues to give workshops on arts and visual culture in schools and cultural institutions across Benin. He has participated in residencies at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam (2015), and Dokoutin, Brussels (2014). Thierry exhibited at the Dakar Biennale in 2014 and at the Berlin Biennial in 2018. He will partecipate at the 21st Contemporary Art Biennial Sesc_Videobrasil in October 2019.
