Meschac Gaba~ Souvenir Palace

Lumen Travo is proud to present the work of Meschac Gaba, an internationally exhibited artist since 1991. Gaba has been exhibited, among others, at the Venice Biennale (2003), Tate Gallery in London (2005), Center Pompidou in Paris (2005), Studio Museum in New York (2005), Sao Paulo Biennale (2006), Witte de With in Rotterdam (2008), and at the
Kunsthalle in Kassel (2009).

Souvenir Palace, an exhibition first displayed as shop-front installation at the Liverpool biennial in 2010, overturns our perceived notion of the souvenir, a mass produced and usually nationalistic trinket. Gaba appropriates combinations of notions and visuals from a political context, such as flags and presidential portraits, and combines these elements with forms symbolic of economic codes used in the West and in Africa, like the mass-produced “migrant bag”, or the key holder. Gaba uses humour and wit mixing and borrowing visuals and symbols familiar to a broad audience, in so doing, he is able to address and poke fun at important issues related to perceptions of our shared, yet complex cultural identity.
